Okay, go with me here: Ace in the original movie actually is a competent detective. He has underworld contacts (the whale hippie), he interviews people of interest (Finkel’s parents), he goes undercover (the mental health facility), and he’s the only one who realizes that Roger Podactor had to have been murdered because of the soundproof glass. Even as a kid I remember liking When Nature Calls way less because he was just a big dumb goofball and everything was played as a gag. It doesn’t surprise me at all the that show decided he was good at his job.
I caught a few minutes of The Mask on MeTV Toons a few months back. It was fucking exhausting.
Which, TBF, makes it an accurate adaptation of the movie. (And I LIKE the movie.)
