Speaking of nerds, that claim that some little girl saw Gandhi on TV on Jan 27, 1948 sent me down a wiki hole. Were their news/current event reels broadcast on TV then? Answer: It’s possible, but most likely if she lived in the New York City area and her family owned one of the million or so TV sets around at the time and she happened to catch some current event related news reel programming that was sometimes shown at the time. (News shows ala “6 o’clock news” would still probably be just watching someone read the news.)
The Echo and Narcissus bit was a great touch. Getting it made me feel better about spending high school reading Bullfinch and Joseph Campbell instead of making friends.
